Community is at the core of everything the Granite Games represents. Many of the loudest cheers, biggest crowds and most heartwarming moments in our history have emerged from our Community divisions. Seeing you on the floor, giving your all, meeting your friends and family in our volunteer ranks, witnessing your squad show up in droves to cheer you on… This is what defines the Granite Games. Yes, we showcase some of the best athletes in the world, but the Community is the beating heart of our competition.
We know what you’re thinking: “I agree. So, why no Community divisions this year?” Simply, it wasn’t possible this year. So we’re writing this to offer you transparency and context, and to let you know that we not only value you deeply, Community, but also to let you know how much we need your support in this transition year. We have all experienced the COVID-19 pandemic with massive disruptions to our daily life, and we have all missed in-person events. We were unable to plan and execute the Granite Games with full Community divisions this year due to ever-changing local restrictions on event size and the protocols necessary to keep everyone safe. This means that it was not feasible this year to host our full slate of divisions from past years.
As you’ve probably heard, the Granite Games is one of a handful of competitions in North America chosen as a CrossFit Games Semifinal event, providing Elite Men, Women and Teams a path to qualify for the 2021 CrossFit Games in Madison, Wisconsin. We’re honored to be one of a select few, but disappointed not to see our community members competing alongside those elite, this year.
Coming out of a year of quarantine and a year’s hiatus for the GG Community, we can assure you this was the very last thing we hoped for as we started piecing together the 2021 Granite Games. To say the absence of the Community divisions on the competition floor leaves a hole in our hearts is a huge understatement, but here’s the good news:
We’re committed to getting the Community back in action in 2022 and beyond as we continue to build back in the wake of COVID-19’s freeze on, well, everything. And to do that, it brings us to a very important request…
We need your support this year. Even though you won’t be throwing down with your best gym mates at the 2021 Granite Games, we need you in the stands cheering on the athletes vying for a place in Madison. We know you love this sport as much as we do, so help us make 2021 a huge success to ensure we can bring it all back around in 2022 and beyond!
Community is what we all lean on to pull through challenges. We’re looking to you, our Community, for that strength now. Together, we can make 2021 an incredible experience…
